Stitching Guide

Cross Stitch

These instructions are for working over one thread of the fabric. (A) To make one cross stitch, bring the needle up at 1, down at 2, up at 3 and down at 4. (B) For horizontal rows in the same colour, work across then back to form the crosses.

Part Stitches

If there is a symbol in the corner of a chart square you should make a three-quarter stitch in that position. The symbol will be a smaller version of the symbol shown in the key. Work a quarter stitch as shown (you will have to split the threads if stitching on aida), then stitch the diagonal half stitch across it.

Where two different symbols share a square, one is a quarter stitch in one colour and the other a three-quarter stitch in the colour you want to be most prominent.

Backstitch

Bring the needle up at 1, down at 2, up at 3 and so on following the line on the chart and working over one thread each time.

French Knots

Bring the needle up where you want the knot to be. Hold the thread as it comes out of the fabric and place the needle behind it. Twist the needle round the thread twice.

Keep the thread taut so the loops are tight round the needle, and push back down where you first emerged.

Long Stitch

Bring the needle up at 1, down at 2, up at 3, and down at 4. Follow the chart for position.

Needlepoint Stitches

Continental Tent Stitch

This is worked in rows from left to right and then from right to left, with a long, oblique stitch on the back. If you are working from the left, come up at the top of the stitch and down at the bottom and, returning from the right, come up at the bottom and down at the top.

Basketweave Stitch

This stitch consists of diagonal stitches worked from one corner of the canvas. Make several stitches up and then several across each time as shown on the diagram. Bring the needle up at 1, down at 2, up at 3, down at 4 and so on.

We highly recommend the Needlecraft Magazine for patterns.
